What is a flexi toy, and how does print-in-place work?

Flexi toys are articulated 3D prints that come off the printer already able to bend. Here is how they are made and what to expect from one.

A toy that is printed already assembled

A flexi toy (also called an articulated or print-in-place toy) is a 3D printed figure made of many small segments joined by loose links. A flexi dragon might have thirty of them from nose to tail.

Nobody snaps those segments together. The printer builds every joint in its final position, leaving a hair-thin gap between the moving parts. When the print is lifted off the bed, the joints are already free, and the toy moves.

Why they are so satisfying to hold

Each link can only swing a little, but there are a lot of them, so the whole body ripples when you tilt it. It makes a soft rattling click as the segments settle. That mix of movement, sound and texture is why people end up fiddling with one for an entire meeting.

Clickers, spirals and helix fidgets use the same idea of parts printed inside or around each other, tuned for a click or a smooth spin.

What they are made of

Almost all flexi toys, including ours, are printed in PLA. It is a rigid, lightweight plastic made from plant sources such as corn starch. It holds fine detail well, which is what makes tiny joints possible.

PLA is not rubbery. A flexi toy flexes at its joints, not in the plastic itself, so it should be bent the way its joints allow and not forced sideways.

What a good one looks like

Every joint should move freely straight away, with no stuck segments. Up close you will see fine horizontal lines: those are the layers the printer laid down, and they are normal on every 3D print.

Colours depend on the filament used, and silk or multi-colour filaments can make the same model look completely different.

Are they for children?

They are desk toys and collectibles more than nursery toys. Many are small or have small parts, so they are not suitable for children under three, and they should not be chewed.
